GABV 2025 Recap: How Uganda Led the Global Conversation on Values-Based Banking.
From March 10th-13th 2025, Uganda took center stage in the global banking conversation as Centenary Bank proudly hosted the Global Alliance for Banking on Values (GABV) Annual Meeting. This was the first time the event was hosted on African soil. Leaders from over 40 countries gathered at Speke Resort Munyonyo to discuss how financial institutions can shape economies that prioritize people and the planet while remaining profitable.
If you didn’t follow the conversation on our social media platforms, here’s a quick recap.
The event kicked off with a welcome dinner where our Managing Director Dr. Fabian Kasi emphasized the critical role of banking in empowering underserved communities.
“Hosting the GABV Annual Meeting in Uganda is a testament to Africa’s growing influence in shaping ethical banking solutions. Our commitment remains firm—finance must work for everyone, not just the privileged few,” our MD said.
His words set the tone for discussions that followed, focusing on the importance of financial inclusion, sustainability, and ethical banking practices.
One of the most anticipated moments was the GABV Public Event, broadcast live on NTV, BBS TV, and AfroMobile. The keynote speaker, Dr. Mamphela Ramphele—Co-President of the Club of Rome and former Managing Director at the World Bank—delivered a powerful message:
“Africa needs to return to her rich heritage as a cradle of Humanity and of the first Human Civilization. This is fundamental in enabling us to regain our self-confidence. We must reawaken ourselves to the consciousness of being human. Africa’s future can only be secured by its return to values-based institutions and relationships that promote wellbeing for all,” she said.
The event was also attended by Prof John Ddumba, the Chairman of Centenary Group and the Bank Board Chairman Mr. Gustavio Bwochi.
Beyond finance, we took the opportunity to introduce our guests to authentic Ugandan and African culture. Delegates immersed themselves in the rhythms of the Kadodi and Bwola dances and later enjoyed true Ugandan cuisine.
The night was a reminder that values-based banking is not just about numbers—it’s about people, history, and the collective future we build.
Staying true to our promise of empowering communities, we also gave a platform to CenteSupawomen—entrepreneurs whose businesses are shaping livelihoods. Delegates had the chance to explore and purchase beautifully crafted African print accessories and innovative handmade goods, turning the event into a marketplace of opportunity.
As the meeting came to a close, delegates reflected on their experience in Uganda.
“Africa is this beacon of hope and opportunity, and I had no idea until we landed on this continent. Just how much energy there is. One of the moments that struck me was when we went on a learning Journey, and we were greeted by these children whose energy and smiles took me back. It’s amazing how much a smile can change the world. Thank you, Centenary Bank, for hosting us.” David Reiling, Chairman of GABV, said in his closing remarks.
At the ceremony, we also handed over the talking stick to Banco Ademi from the Dominican Republic, the next host of the GABV Annual Meeting.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our sponsors Pebbu Africa, NBS TV, spidd Africa, NSSF, ZubaCx, Hitachi, Craft Silicon, MicroPay, Service Cops, Four Corners, The Uganda Institute of Banking and Financial Services, FINCON Africa, Prudential, VISA, and all the delegates for making #GABV2025 a success.
For Centenary Bank, hosting this was more than just an event—it was a defining moment in its journey towards building a more inclusive and sustainable financial future for Uganda and beyond.
See you in the Dominican Republic next year.
